The Music Machine!

2021: The Music Machine and Dance Machine workshops WILL be modified and held this year. The Mini Music Machine will NOT be held this year. See our first page (home page) for more information.

Anchorage Alaska's The Music Machine is a summer workshop in American Musical Theatre for children, ages 3 to 18. Our mission is to make the positive experience of active involvement in the performing arts available to all interested children.

The program began as the brainchild of Janet Carr-Campbell and Darl Schaaff, both nationally recognized entertainers. The Music Machine was formed in 1982 and incorporated as a not for profit organization a few years later. Touching the lives of many, it has featured over 5,000 kids; and it has expanded to include The Dance Machine, for similar ages, and The Mini Music Machine, for ages 3-6.

The Music Machine has received awards from the Alaska State Legislature, as well as the 2001 Chamber of Commerce Gold-pan Award for Premiere Service to Youth. We were honored in 2003 with the Mayor’s Youth Arts Award and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority award. And in 2011, our Artistic Director Janet Carr-Campbell was selected as a YWCA Woman of Achievement.

The real success of The Music Machine is when a child spends a summer making friends, growing and developing into a young adult with confidence and self-esteem fostered by being part of a great team effort.

As the Covid-19 Pandemic situation improves, the CDC continues to lessen their recommendations.  For any kind of singing and performing, they are still recommending limited contact, masking, and extra distancing. So we will have smaller groups that are rehearsing in a larger space!

We will be at Highland Academy Charter School (5530 E. Northern Lights Blvd.) at the southeast corner of Boniface and Northern Lights (map below). Their homepage: https://www.asdk12.org/highlandacademy

It has a large indoor area, as well as a contained outdoor area for our use.  At this same location, on the final workshop day your group will give a performance; we will be able to have a small, in person audience (specific details to follow).

For this reopening, we are combining the Music Machine and the Dance Machine. Each age group will work on MM medleys and DM dances, so there will be a little bit of something for everyone.  Jack Klauschie and I are both eager to work with your talented kids. We’re planning some fun and challenging numbers.

Thanks again for your continued patience and understanding as we navigate our constantly changing world!  Please check your calendars, and e- mail  themusicmachine@live.com to get registered.

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone!  Janet  907-227-0509

P.S. As we previously announced, our Board of Directors decided that

we will NOT have The Mini Music Machine programs (ages 3-6) this summer, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  It would be too difficult to follow CDC guidelines with this age group.

We look forward to the safe return of all of our workshops and performances in 2022.

Previous (April, 2021) update:

Thanks for your interest in the Music Machine programs.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, we’re still not sure if we can offer any workshops this summer, but it MAY be possible! Here’s our latest information:

The Music Machine and Dance Machine workshops MAY be modified and held this year.

As the Covid-19 Pandemic situation gets better, the CDC is lessening some recommendations.  However, for any kind of singing and performing, they are still recommending limited contact, masking, and extra distancing.

Following guidelines from the CDC and the Municipality of Anchorage,

-- We will need to have smaller groups, and those smaller groups will need to rehearse in a larger space.

-- We are searching for a larger rehearsal space that will be available to us and convenient for families.

-- We are doing our best to make it happen for Group I (ages 6-9; June 14-July 1), Group II (ages 10-13; June 14-July 1), and Group III (ages 14-18; July 12-29).

We will update this website as soon as we have a final decision.

The Mini Music Machine programs (ages 3-6) will NOT be held this summer, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  It would be too difficult to follow CDC guidelines with this age group, so our Board has made the decision to not offer any Mini Music Machine (ages 3-6) programs this summer.

The safety of our students and staff are of the utmost importance.

NEXT SUMMER, we look forward to having our usual programs, similar to what we previously outlined on the following pages.

Thank you for your patience and support.

Last year's update, for your information:

April 17, 2020

Dear Friends, Families, Kids, and Supporters of The Music Machine,

This is an official announcement from the Board of Directors of The Music Machine, Inc.

As of 4-07-20, the decision was made that The Music Machine, Dance Machine and Mini Music Machine workshops will NOT be held this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Paramount in this decision was keeping our kids, staff, volunteers, and audience members safe and healthy.  In accordance with City and State mandates, our rehearsal studio and performing spaces are currently closed down, with no set time to re-open.

Rescheduling our summer programs for this calendar year is not possible.

Your donations and support are more critical now than ever before. (The federal government has recently reinstated some not for profit donation tax benefits.)  In order to remain a viable business in this current economic slump, we need to continue to reach out for your donations. You can donate to us through the Pick.Click.Give program, or mail a check to The Music Machine, Inc. 13320 Floral Lane  Anchorage, AK 99516. We are very grateful for your support!

If you have already signed up for 2020 workshops, please rest assured that we will transfer those registrations to 2021, and reserve your spots for next summer.

We trust that you will stay engaged with us through email (themusicmachine@live.com), our Facebook page (TheMusicMachineAlaska), or Instagram (Themusicmachineanchorage).

As you visit our website (themusicmachineanchorage.com), please know that our 2021 programs will be similar in schedule and design.

In the meantime, please continue to sing your songs, and dance your dances. We miss you already and are looking forward to seeing everyone for a fabulous summer of musical fun in 2021 - our 40th season!

All the Best,

Barbara Digert, President of The Board of Directors
